The vestiges of the princely court at TΓrgovi║te, one of the most beautiful medieval monuments in Romania, are situated in the north-western part of the town, near the Chindia Park and Lake Chindia, not far from the Ialomi■a River.
Often invoked by many a Romantic poet, this medieval complex is dominated by the Tower of Chindia, built by Vlad the Impeller (1456û1462). This is a 27-m-tall dungeon, with battlements and narrow ogive-shaped windows. The princely palace was built by Mircea the Old (1386û1418), enlarged by Petru Cercel (1583û1585), and restored by Matei Basarab (1632û1654) and Constantin BrΓncoveanu (1688û1714). The medieval complex includes a medieval art museum, the Church of Holy Friday (built in 1517), the vestiges of the chapel erected in 1395 and the remains of the princely baths built by Matei Basarab, as well as those of the hospital built by Princess Bπla║a in 1656.
